The True Meaning Of Christmas

This is a very special song for us, a beautiful Lou Gerolami melody, and the first Christmas song that we've written together. We hope that it will find its way into the studio sometime soon so that it can be recorded and prepared for release during the upcoming holiday season.

This song should be a bonanza for the first artist who records it, and we feel that it has the potential to be included on many holiday cds in the future. The great thing about Christmas songs is that they're given new life every year when radio stations add them to their play lists, in heavy rotation, between Thanksgiving and the end of December. And annual sales of holiday cds and digital downloads can generate steady income for everyone involved. Considering that, recording this Christmas song is almost a no-brainer. The only question is, who will be the first to record it?

The True Meaning Of Christmas

Snow covers the ground,
And lights glow on the evergreen,
There's joy all around,
Tonight it will be Christmas Eve...

Little children believe,
That reindeer fly with Santa's sleigh,
And when they're asleep,
He'll leave presents they'll find Christmas Day...

-refrain-
And the story from the Bible that we know so well,
Is the reason for this season of joy,
This is the true meaning of Christmas,
In a manger in Bethlehem, Mary gave birth to a boy...

Glory to God,
Our Savior has been born,
Let us keep Jesus Christ in Christmas,
And celebrate...the birth...of the Lord...

-instrumental break, strum through last verse-
-repeat vocal for refrain and last verse-

Merry Christmas For Me Is Okay
(words and music by Bill Naughton, Jr.)

This song took me two years to complete. I started it two years ago during the Christmas season when the postmaster in my home town told me that she couldn't say "Merry Christmas" to a customer unless the customer said "Merry Christmas" to her first. I thought that was a good theme for a song so I wrote it down. I came up with a few more lines, then Christmas came and went, and the song got "shelved." I worked on it a little more, now and then, another Christmas season came and went, and the song remained unfinished. (It's not easy sometimes.)

Then this year, I dropped some money in a Salvation Army kettle and the bell ringer said, "Thank you, happy holidays." I went into the store but when I came out I approached her and said, "You know, you're a Christian organization, and you said 'happy holidays,' you really should be saying 'Merry Christmas,'" and she told me that she'd been told by her bosses that she had to say "happy holidays." I walked away knowing that I had found the missing lines for my song.

I worked on it for a couple days and everything just seemed to fall into place. Even the melody, which I didn't think much of at first, started to feel right. I'm primarily a lyricist, but very often those of us who write words have what we call a "guide melody" to help us get the rhythm and the meter for the verses and the chorus, and sometimes, with a few alterations, this guide melody ends up sounding pretty good.  It happened with my song Meet The Beatles, and I think it happened again with this song.

There are two demos posted below, one on guitar and one vocal only.

The clerk at the post office can't say "Merry Christmas,"
Unless someone greets her that way first,
Our currency says "In God we trust," but I guess,
Some folks would like to forget Jesus Christ,
Now I'm into diversity, but it doesn't make sense to me,
That it seems like a sin if we say,
Two words simple and true, so between me and you,
Merry Christmas for me is okay...

-chorus-
Merry Christmas for me is okay,
It's what I was brought up to say,
I believe baby Jesus was born on this day,
Merry Christmas for me is okay,
Merry Christmas for me is okay...

In school children learn these days, to say Happy Holidays,
And they can't use term Christmas tree,
Even Christian church bell ringers, are told by their managers,
Not to say "Merry Christmas" to me,
It's that time of the year again and to me it's quite clear my friend,
There are those who'd restrict what we say,
But Christ is the reason for this holiday season,
Merry Christmas for me is okay...

-repeat chorus-

-bridge-
If you deny he exists, the true meaning is missed,
And that's not how God meant it to be,
You can think what you want, believe what you will,
But you can not re-write His story...

-break, strum through one verse piano or horn-

-repeat chorus-
